East Street, Taunton (Now closed)

Consultation on the future of East Street, Taunton

In June 2020 East St was closed to general traffic to allow social distancing and to encourage more cycling and walking.

Additional parking bays on adjacent streets were added and Blue Badge access to East Street was permitted since December 2020 between 8-10am. This was to minimise traffic whilst enabling access to services and retail for those who are dependent on using a car.

As we move away from Covid-19 restrictions, we are now keen to embed the changes we have seen from the drastic reduction of traffic on East Street; less noise and pollution, cleaner air, more cycling and walking and a more pleasant shopping experience for many.

SWT’s Executive Committee have asked officers to explore with the community how the permanent pedestrianisation of East Street could benefit all, including using the reclaimed space for markets, outdoor dining and on-street entertainment, as well as safer and more accessible cycling and walking.

These changes have the potential to offer further unforeseen benefits and uses around accessibility and mobility that have yet to be explored, but could also have fewer positive impacts on the town and community more widely. It is vital that we can explore the benefits and mitigate against any negative impacts, to reach a balance that is aligned to the overall benefit of the town.
